Swans and Roses.

I currently have a red rose in my possession, I love roses.. they are one of my favourite flowers and it is impossible for my to have a rose and to not photograph it... so in the past few days I have taken my camera to it. I did intend to set the rose on fire and photograph it, but I have found out that it is incredibly hard to set a rose on fire.... so more research is needed!

Ninth day at Rankin... and a few photos of Kentish Town.. and a dog! 8th November.

Took a few photos around Kentish Town today (well, between Kentish Town West station and the Studio!). It's a nice little walk as there are loads of quirky houses which hint towards the fact that you are in the borough of Camden!

It was a very busy day in the studio, we were preparing sets for a portrait shoot and video interview in the morning; so that included a lot of painting (from painting the floors to touching up on the large woorden flats), lighting candles, steaming creases from cloth/linen, and a whole menagerie of other things! Our portrait sitter and interviewer arrived and we all jumped into gear, working as a team to make the interview as effective as possible!! After the interview the portrait sitter went into styling for a few touch ups and everyone prepared for the first set by testing the lighting, finishing the set up, and tidying things up... this process repeated throughout all the sets we used. This shoot was probably one of my favourites, one of the reasons is because it was portraiture (I love a good portrait), another reason is because I've finally started to get my head around all the kit and how a shoot runs... so I think I was quite helpful in my assisting! And another reason is because the photographs from this shoot were AMAZING!

It didn't just finish at the shoot today, we then had an opening for an Exhibition by Rankin called "Bear Faced". This series is where Rankin photographed women, who are seen by many as beautiful, without any makeup on.... except a small pawprint. This is to raise awareness of a campaign to raise money for children in need.. the campaign encourages women to go without makeup for a day, have a small pawprint on their face, and raise money for the charity through this. The exhibition was great, and there was a great vibe in the gallery as people arrived, viewed the work, and connected with each other.

(Met this dog called Twinkle Toes on the tube today, she was lovely and I had to take a quick snap!).

Ice Cream, Summer and Pretty Flowers. 16th August.

Whilst I was in the city of Peterborough today I realised the us Brits seem to have a love affair with ice cream cones in the summer. Wherever you look there is someone holding a wafer cone filled with soft vanilla ice cream, I have to say that I embrace the trend of ice cream in the summer! Even on days which aren't particularly hot or "summery" the ice cream vans come out in force and the punters flock towards their nearest ice cream distribution centre.

I also found these two rather vibrant flowers today in the gardens surrounding the Peterborough Cathedral, I decided to suddenly become a nature photographer and snapped a couple of typical stock-photography style shots.

Surreal Valentine. 14th February.

I thought I would use Valentines Day to experiment with a little bit of surreal photography.
Hope you have all had and are having a nice Valentines Day.

Exploding Flower. 29th January.

This photograph was inspired by the work of Nick Knight, I love his series of still life powder flower photographs (photos below). I decided to use the idea of powder making the impression of flowers, but I made it more literal in this photograph.

Stars. 16th January.

After a shoot I did this morning of photographing still life of flowers in Ice, I felt like doing a bit more still life, but this time by experimenting with light and shadows. So I found and old jar, stuck some star sequins onto it, put a tea light candle in it, and then photographed it.

The Ice shoot went quite well and I am slowly building upon the collection, it is a project which is really fun to undertake, but also challenging. Here is one of the processed photos:

The Flower. 15th January.

If you remember the Frozen shoot I did in December you may be pleased to know that I am expanding on that shoot tomorrow, but I am focussing on flowers this time. This shoot gave me the perfect excuse to buy a bouquet of flowers, this beautiful flower was included in the bouquet and I thought it would make a great photo for today!

Orchid. 10th January.

I have this Orchid in my conservatory, they're lovely flowers, so intricate and delicately designed. The sun was shining right through them today and I thought it would make a rather lovely photograph!

Also, I was working on a few experimental edits of photos from my electric landscape project, I posted them in my last blog post so if you missed them then check them out.

I haven't mentioned twitter for a while, if you have twitter then follow me if you want to: https://twitter.com/#!/TheRuthJones

Flower of Light. 24th of November.

Here is a flower, not a normal flower, it's a flower of light... the normal eye can't see it, but the camera can!

Today I have been researching into and planning my new project, a series of photographs documenting home education families in England. I was home educated up until the age of 16 and I absolutely loved it and benefited from it a lot, this subject is something I am passionate about and I am really excited to start working on this project! I will keep you informed whilst I am working on it!
